From the NY Times: Files Vanished, Young Chinese Lose the Future
This should serve as a warning to those of us who feel that we must rush to copy the educational systems of foreign countries. This is a heartbreaking story of ruined hopes and academic excellence made worthless.
SCIENCE
Who would think that CLOSING nuclear reactors could have tragic results?
A particular reactor in Canada produces most of the radioisotope technetium-99m, which is used in over 40,000 medical prodedures a day in the US alone! The Ontario, Canada reactor has been closed for safety reasons since May 14, and the other major supplier, a Dutch reactor is also now closed for about a month. The Dutch reactor will close for repairs again in 2010. How dire? The tail end of the supply is coming to the U.S. this week.
REAL ESTATE
For seven years, twice the number of downtown condos were built in San Diego than in Los Angeles, which is several times the size of San Diego. Now, these condos are languishing, waiting for buyers who have the cash or who can get a loan for a half price condo! (I've looked, and I don't see any bargains in downtown San Diego.)

How the heck do we detain this man for 13 months, when he had a birth certificate, and a VETERAN's birth certificate (A DD 214), but Lou Dobbs gets a get out of jail pass?
